Blackheads or Whiteheads are blockages of oil glands. The blackheads are more superficial than the whiteheads. Their black color is not dirt, but the oil and skin debris that accumulates in the opening of the oil gland and is visible on the surface. see pictures
Acne Surgery
Acne surgery by a dermatologist involves gently draining the material producing,
or resulting from the blockage. This treatment usually produces rapid and
immediate improvement. However, it is time consuming and frequently is not
performed because of time constraints on the physician. In my experience,
Acme surgery performed on ALL forms of Acme is a very effective method of
producing a speedy and frequently dramatic improvement in patients’ Acme.
When patients are skeptical, a trial of Acme surgery on one half of their
Acme almost always produces a request for Acme surgery on the untreated side.

Treatment of Blackheads and Whiteheads includes the following topical medications:
(individually or in combination as recommended by the dermatologist)
Retinoids such as Adapalene (Differin), or Retinoic Acid (e.g. Retin A)
Azelaic Acid (Azelex)
Alpha Hydroxy Acids - such as Glycolic acid
Salicylic acid - (Beta Hydroxy Acid)
Benzoyl Peroxide
