Dr Ewa answers your questions on why your pimple patch didn't work and what to do

We get it, it’s frustrating when you wake up all excited to see what your patch absorbed but instead, all you find is nothing. It’s super disappointing! We received some reviews where people have said their patch didn’t work for them.

Why is that? Let's dive into what customers have said and find out where it went wrong!

1. “My blemish is still there”

Ask: Is it the right blemish?

Before we jump into why your blemish is still there, let’s review the formulation of Breakout Patch! Breakout Patch is made with hydrocolloid, which are made of gel-forming agents, such as pectin. It adheres to your skin to provide insulation and a moist, healing environment. Its goal is to pull out all the liquid impurities that are inside a pimple or pore, such as pus, sebum, and excess oil.

If your pimple isn’t a pimple that has fluid inside of it, then the patch will have almost nothing to absorb (there’s always a tad of oil from your skin). Your pimple is ready for a patch when it has come to a head. These are called whitehead pimples because you see the whitehead at the centre of the pimple.

2. “My patch didn’t absorb anything”

Ask: Does your pimple need the extra push?

Similar to what we’ve written above, some pimples can be “too deep” or “too fresh” for a patch to absorb fluid. These red pimples are called papules (without a head). But hey, you can still use a patch even if it isn’t a whitehead. Everyone says we shouldn’t pop our pimples, but that’s only because using our fingernails to pinch our skin is (a) painful, (b) causes broken vessels and redness and (c) you can accidentally push all the dead skin cells in the clogged pore deeper. All of this can worsen the pimple.

Because papules are deeper in the skin, that layer of skin (your epidermis) is thicker than if the pimple was a whitehead. What you can do is take a sterile needle and poke a tiny hole in the centre of the pimple. By creating an incision, you’re allowing the fluid underneath the epidermis to be better absorbed by the patch.

Dermatologist Dr Ewa, recommends to her patients to use a needle as well. Creating a tiny hole isn’t painful, won’t worsen the pimple, nor leave a scar so it’s totally safe! Dr Ewa also highly recommends using Breakout Patch to prevent picking and touching the pimple!

3. “My patch falls off my skin”

Ask: Is the area around the skin clean?

This isn’t to say that your face isn’t clean. But depending on which step in your skincare routine you use the patch, your face might already be covered in moisture. For example, if you put on a patch at night, chances are that you've already applied your toners, serums or moisturisers. With so many “wet” products on your skin, it’s too wet for any patch to adhere.

Breakout Patch is one the best and stickiest pimple patches you’ll find on the market! There are two ways to ensure the best adhesion of the Breakout Patch. You can either (a) put on a patch before you begin the rest of your skincare or (b) apply your liquids and creams, wipe the blemish area clean with a wet tissue, and then put on a patch.

If you have dry skin and don’t want to wipe away what you’ve applied, wait 30 minutes for your products to absorb then put on a patch!
